Get Involved! A Message from the President of IDIBC
Written by Robert Ledingham, LLB,BID, RID, FIDC, FIIDA President IDIBC-----
Greetings to all the members of IDIBC. I want to start by giving sincere thanks to outgoing President Jim Toy for providing such enthusiastic leadership during his tenure as President. Jim was instrumental in the sponsorship category developing within the organization, and the sponsors’ commitment to the IDI is truly amazing. The membership should be inspired by the level of sponsor involvement on various committees; we now need the interest and support of our registered members to make these committees a success.
Jim remains a ‘trooper’ for IDI and is currently guiding a public relations initiative to develop a campaign for the organization. Thanks to those committee members for their involvement.
Our executive is still without a Vice President. We ask all of you to consider this position for ’09. Get involved!
The Spring-Summer party was a big success. Held at the Terminal City Club - freshly designed by Seeton Shinkewski - the Midsummer Night’s Dream was imaginative and well attended. Many thanks to Lisa, Susi and their hardworking committee for a job well done. Work has already started on a Fall venue which we hope will be larger and more affordable!
The party was quickly followed by a very successful Garage Sale held in conjunction with the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Once again we had tremendous support from our sponsor community; not only did they donate a lot of product but they proved to be excellent salespeople. Many thanks to all the volunteers. It was a financial success and to quote from the director, Kim Pettersen, “Total sales on products donated by IDI sponsors totaled $4,290.00 We had people lined up at the gate in the morning and had our highest traffic and sales day since the Vancouver ReStore’s grand opening!”
We are now into Summer and our committees are busy preparing Fall initiatives. I wish you all a pleasant Summer and let us hope that the recession will soon be over.

KAREN LUTZ IS HONOURED WITH IDI FELLOWSHIP
Written by Anne Savill, RID (Fellow) FIDC, Board of Governors IDI & IDC-----
On May 13th, 2009, the Georgian Court Hotel was the venue for the 59th Annual General Meeting of the Interior Designers Institute of BC. Each year prior to the AGM, the Fellow Members of the Board of Governors meet to discuss among other issues nominations for fellowships. This year the Board honoured Karen Lutz.
As a reminder to those who are not aware, this Lifetime Honour is bestowed on one:
• having shown dedication to the IDI through maintaining a high level of involvement over an extended period of time;
• having shown initiative by holding various positions of responsibility and leadership;
• having been a member in good standing for a minimum of 15 years;
• being of good character and adhering to the ethical standards of IDI;
• being appointed by 2/3 majority vote of the Directors with the approval of the Board of Governors.
Karen is an unassuming member of IDI and her many achievements have not received the public acclaim they deserve. The following is a short resume of her service to IDI to date and an inspiration to our membership; to those who give generously of their time and talents and who understand the challenges of a non-profit organization; and to those who have yet to contribute this is an invitation to become involved in your chosen profession.
Karen joined IDI in 1991. Shortly thereafter she volunteered her time with the Garage Sale in 1994. Without missing a beat she organized a number of NCIDQ Jury sessions and juried the exam.
In 1997 together with Joan Kraayvaner and Alyssa Myshok, she volunteered on the Membership Committee.
The first IDI Education Forum was held in 1998. This forum provided IDI with a knowledge and understanding of the various design education programs offered to students of interior design at the post-secondary level in BC. From this forum IDI was able to establish three programs that provide education acceptable to the profession of interior design in this province. Karen was instrumental in the organization of this forum. That same year she co-chaired the planning of the IDI Christmas Party together with Scott Parry.
From 1997 to 1999 Karen served IDI as First Vice President. Her term was longer than usual as the year-end was changed from June to December. During this period Karen worked tirelessly to fundraise for the 1999 Annual General Meeting of the Interior Designers of Canada that was held in Vancouver. This was done by selling industry sponsors advertising spots and/or web links on the IDI web site that David Hanson was working hard to develop. It was the beginning of what is now the hugely successful sponsorship program. While Susan Steeves did an excellent job of developing this program, Karen laid the groundwork three years earlier, and continued fundraising during her presidency.
She has taken on such initiatives as exploring a health, life & disability insurance program for smaller firms and sole practitioners, and actively participated in Legal Committee meetings.
In 2000, she and Rudy Klauser assisted David Hanson in resurrecting the Awards of Excellence Program which had languished in previous years.
From 1999-2001 she served a two-term presidency of IDI, and currently serves on the Board of Governors. For the past three years she has acted for IDI as the NCIDQ representative and is part of the NCIDQ Practicum Committee.
Over the past 15 years Karen has given so much to IDI. It is often those who work quietly in the background who achieve the greatest results. She has been recognized for her services with an IDI Award of Recognition in 2004 and various Certificates of Appreciation, and now finally with this Lifetime Honour.
As an inspiration to the membership, especially the newer and younger members of the association, it is hoped that many others will emulate Karen’s example of service, and get involved with the Interior Designers Institute of BC.

THE MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM –
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
Written by Lisa MacIntosh, Co-Chair Member Events
-----
This year’s summer party “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” was launched with our new Platinum sponsor, Heron Construction & Millwork Ltd., at the Terminal City Club on June 25th. TCC’s breathtaking views of the North Shore, the outstanding job of the Member Events committee, and our attendance of 225 people made this a night to remember. The whimsical setting with tree centerpieces, forests and butterflies complimented the venue and theme of the night, along with the delightful menu and the entertainment of the raffle draw.
Thank you to our Bronze sponsors who donated to the charity raffle, which in turn allowed us to raise $1,600 to support the Lasting M.A.G.I.C. Society. The excited winners walked away with wonderful gifts such as spa packages, art, restaurant gift certificates, carpets, and a home entertainment system.
Don’t forget to watch for your “save the date” invite to our fall party coming up in mid-October.
